Environmental graphics

For the MBIE project, the new staircase and environmental graphics were carefully integrated with the existing interior design. Colour selections were chosen to complement the space while reflecting MBIE’s character, creating a cohesive and considered visual language rather than a purely decorative intervention.

A defining feature of the project was the bespoke patterning, developed in collaboration with a master carver. This collaboration brought together traditional craft and contemporary design, resulting in patterns rich in cultural meaning and grounded in the region’s artistic heritage.

The battening design drew inspiration from nearby mountain ranges significant to local iwi, embedding a subtle but meaningful connection to place. These references acknowledge the cultural and historical context of the site, particularly in relation to local treaties, and demonstrate how environmental graphics can tell deeper stories within public spaces.

This project was delivered while Urlich Studio was contracting to Warren and Mahoney.
